with the added guys of prismall and welsh do you think next year if he stays injury free he could finally make him a star in the comp?

i do! he has been playing very well and with him starting to get comfortable around goals can only help...also with prismall and welsh running fit he may take 2nd or 3rd mid.

Jobe Watson already is a star of the competition.
Just not recognised as such, purely because 'people' still think his kicking is as ---- as it was a couple of years ago, he doesn't have the blinding speed to go on a cutting run and bounce and doesn't 'kick enough goals'.
But his inside clearance work is absolutely ---- elite. The way he can read the play is up with the best I've seen. Seriously, the way he can get his body in position and be in the right spot at the right time is Hird like. If Jobe can keep up this form in the years to come, eh, I think the 'modern equivalent' would be Hayes. Shockingly underrated, but a superstar of the competition - and Jobe can be better, especially as his kicking is improving all the time (just his brain fades get noticed more).

At the moment he's pretty much flying solo as far as the tough inside midfield work goes. As the team 'grows up' and matures around him + he gets some experienced support around, it's going to make him look even better.

*sigh* if only he was a few steps quicker... meh, we've got enough speed 8-)

You were going ok until this bit. He is not flying solo, Hocking does almost as much work in the middle, and Lonergan has a crack when he is there, just doenst get enough of the ball.

He doesnt need to get any quicker. He is able to dodge tackles without moving, why does he need to be fast?

Good player, hardly a star......you gave a few reasons yourself as to why he isn't a star.

Yeah that post is full of contradictions. Not sure Greg knows what it takes to be a star of the AFL. :|

Greg is up there with the best of them with being a tad biased to his own team I am thinking.......

Star.

Reminds me a lot of Robert Harvey. Cool, calm, strong core, good decision making, hard at it, has the ability to make those around him better, natural leader.

Hmmmmm. apart from the 2 brownlows he's won and the respect he has from every other player who played with him, yeah I suppose you're right.

Watson is a bit of a poor mans Harvey. 8-)

Not sure how many time we have argued this, but fact is, this year Watson CAN kick the ball.

So he's done it for 8 games out of his 80?

Yep, he's just as good as Robert Havey. Bahahahahahahaha!

BTW, I'll be sending Fly a link to this thread when he comes back. Time to do some Duckman style back flipping, Fatboy. ;)

Totally. It's obviously wayyyyyyyyyy too early to put him on that sort of level when it comes to accomplishments, but they way Watson goes about the game, his impact on the game, his strenghts and his weaknesses are very Harvey like.

If Jobe could knock the snot out of someone when he hip and shouldered them or run though a brick wall then pick up the bricks and start eating them, I would compare him to a young Mark Ruccuito - but he shares more of a quiet demeanor like Bangers did.

Are you all on something here...you cannot be serious right!

Jobe is a good player and is yet to even show glimpses of being a star.
And to compare him with Harvey..............Not even as good as his shadow.
From the couple of Essendon games I have seen Jobe is a very VERY different style of player to begin with I haven't seen him in and under more of a wide receiver, he doesn't have half of the stamina of Harvs and yes sadly his disposal still isn't the best. (better, but no cigar still)

He does get in there and win the ball in contested situations, but he keeps his feet, so you don't see him under packs very much.

I think he's a good player, but not a star and never will be. He could still play 200-250 games though, he's that sort of player IMO.
